Jean Chretien was Canada’s prime minister, Forrest Gump won the Best Picture Oscar, Michael Jackson performed at the MTV Music Video Awards, and the West Coast Express left the station for the first time in 1995.
TransLink’s commuter train will celebrate 30 years of service with a special event for families on Nov. 1, and will run a special Saturday train to get people there.
The transit authority for the Lower Mainland is inviting everyone to drop by the West Coast Express platform at Waterfront Station (601 West Cordova St., Vancouver) between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to join the celebration.
The event will show appreciation for the train, its staff, and the customers who have kept the West Coast Express rolling for three decades. There will be prize giveaways, musical performances, photo ops on the West Coast Express locomotive, and a meet and greet with West Coast Express Staff. Kids can enjoy special West Coast Express colouring sheets, activity books, games, treats, and more, and there will be a TransLink trading card available.
Normally a weekday commuter train that runs during rush hour, the West Coast Express will roll on Saturday, Nov. 1, and will leave Port Haney Station at 9:19 a.m., Maple Meadows Station at 9:25 a.m., and from Pitt Meadows Station at 9:29 a.m.
TransLink advises you’ll have to tap your Compass card, as regular fares apply.
