Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows remind residents of fireworks prohibitions

This fall, the cities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are reminding residents that fireworks and firecrackers are prohibited to be sold or set off in these cities.

As Halloween, Diwali and fall celebrations approach, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows city halls advise residents they need a valid permit to set off fireworks. These regulations are designed to help keep the community safe and prevents injuries, fires, and harm to pets and wildlife.

Maple Ridge bylaws advises:

• No person can sell, give, trade, or offer for sale any fireworks or firecrackers.

• No person may possess, discharge, or set off fireworks without a valid permit.

• Anyone found in violation may be directed to surrender fireworks to a Peace Officer and may face fines ranging from $500 to $1,000.

The fine in Pitt Meadows is $500, and may include costs incurred.

The cities’ bylaws and fire departments, along with the RCMP, will be responding to fireworks-related complaints as Halloween and other celebrations approach.

Only public fireworks displays approved by the fire departments are allowed. Event organizers must apply for a fireworks permit and submit a safety plan for approval.
