Income assistance won’t be disrupted despite B.C. strike action: Ministry

British Columbians can expect income assistance to remain top priority as the province continues to work through the B.C. General Employees’ Union strike action.

Social Development and Poverty Reduction Ministry said in an Oct. 16 release that disability and income assistance services will continue for those in need. Service BC locations have been affected by the job action since Oct. 8.

The ministry added the provincial Senior’s Supplement October payment will continue as usual.

The release says the cheque issuing process on Oct. 22 will continue as normal and payment distributions will arrive on time, although mail cheque delivery may see delays the ministry says. Canada Post and its unionized employees are also working through job action with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers on rotating strike action.

If you are a part of the approximately 89 per cent of people who have signed up to receive payment through direct deposit, you will not be affected by any potential Canada Post service disruption.

For seniors who receive federal income assistance, specifically the Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement, and may have questions about service delivery or direct deposit sign-ups, they are asked to call Service Canada at 1 800 277-9914.
