B.C. police watchdog probes Quesnel shooting, man critically injured

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) is investigating a Quesnel incident that left a man with life-threatening injuries.

According to a press release from the police watchdog, on April 15, 2026, at approximately 4:28 p.m., Quesnel RCMP responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on the 500-block of Nason Street.

A man was reportedly discharging a firearm within the residence, with some rounds striking a neighbouring residence. No other individuals were believed to be inside, as police contained the scene.

The North District Emergency Response Team attended and attempted to establish communication with the man, but received no response. Officers made entry into the home and discovered the suspect suffering from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Emergency medical assistance was provided at the scene, and the man was transported to the hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The IIO was notified about the incident and is now investigating police actions related to the event . As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO, no further information will be released by police.

During an investigation, the IIO looks at whether serious harm occurred and if there is a connection between the harm and an interaction with an officer. If those are both true, the investigation will continue and the chief civilian director of the organization will determine if there are reasonable grounds to believe an offence occurred.

The IIO is an independent civilian agency that conducts oversight on officers and detention guards in B.C. It investigates all incidents involving officers and guards that result in serious harm or death.
