Island RCMP officer killed on duty in 2016 remembered for warm heart, big smile

Peers and family are fondly and publicly remembering West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett, a mother of two who was killed in the line of duty on April 5, 2016.

“She left me with the best part of her, those boys,” husband Brad Aschenbrener, said in a video, shared on social media on the 10th anniversary of Beckett’s death.

Others spoke to her service, kindness, strength and spirit.

She fit the cliches, said retired superintendent Phil Lue who worked with Beckett in Port McNeill. She lit up a room, and took care of everyone.

“She just wanted to help,” he said. “Anyone that got to meet her and spend time with her, was lucky.”

Oak Bay Police Chief Julie Chanin, who also worked with Beckett on the North Island, praised her drive, determination and sense of duty to “really do right by people.”

“When she did things she was all in. Wore her heart on her sleeve,” Chanin said.

The rain didn’t stop hundreds of people from taking part in the first Sarah Beckett Memorial Run in Langford on April 19, 2019. More than 900 people registered for the five-kilometre family run to honour the late officer. This year’s run is set for May 10 at Starlight Stadium, 1089 Langford Pkwy.

Those who can’t make the local event, can participate virtually.

Registration is $35, $15 for those 12 and younger, and includes a race bib and a medal. Virtual registration is $25 and includes a medal.
