Boeser nets 2 as Canucks end long losing skid with 6-3 win over Blackhawks

Brock Boeser scored twice, including the winner early in the third period, helping the visiting Vancouver Canucks end a seven-game losing skid with a 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center in Chicago.

Drew O’Connor, Jake DeBrusk, Teddy Blueger and Max Sasson also scored for the Canucks (19-36-7), while Marcus Pettersson had two assists. Nikita Tolopilo earned the win in goal, stopping 20 shots.

Ryan Donato, Ilya Mikheyev and Frank Nazar replied for Chicago (23-29-10). Arvid Soderblom took the loss in net, stopping 16 of 20 shots.

The teams exchanged five goals in a wide-open first period.

Donato opened the scoring at 1:08, dumping the puck into the Vancouver zone, grabbing the bounce off the backboards and slipping it past Tolopilo for his 14th goal of the year.

One minute later, O’Connor pulled Vancouver even, tipping home a goalmouth pass from Tom Willander to count his 15th marker on the season.

Just 24 seconds later, DeBrusk gave the Canucks a 2-1 lead, with his 14th of the year, deflecting home a point shot from Zeev Buium.

Four minutes after that, Blueger scored his sixth of the season, knocking in a backhand feed from Marcus Pettersson.

Mikheyev’s 12th of the year, off a nice feed into the slot from Oliver Moore, drew Chicago back within one at the 12-minute mark.

Shots after 20 minutes were seven apiece.

The Blackhawks carried the play for much of the middle period, outshooting the Canucks 10-6 and scoring the only goal of the frame. Nazar tipped home Alex Vlasic’s point shot with 43 seconds left to tie things at 3-3. Nazar has eight goals for the year.

Boeser gave the Canucks a 4-3 lead 2:40 into the third, swatting a rebound out of mid-air and past Soderblom for his 14th goal of the season.

The Blackhawks believed they had tied it with five minutes remaining but officials ruled the puck was kicked in by forward Landon Slaggert.

Chicago pulled Soderblom with 1:45 left to play but were unable to beat Tolopilo. Sasson sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 18:34, his 11th tally of the season. Boeser added his second of the game, also into an empty net, with 16 seconds to play to round out the scoring.

Vancouver plays again on Saturday, when they visit the Winnipeg Jets (4 p.m.).
