Illegal motorcycle taken off Maple Ridge road during road safety blitz

An illegal mountain bike was removed from the road during a recent RCMP safety blitz in Maple Ridge.

Crime Prevention volunteers and staff were out with ICBC and members of the Ridge Meadows RCMP Road Safety Target Team at the intersection of 228 Street and Lougheed Highway late last week.

They were holding signs reminding drivers to watch for cyclists when turning right, to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, and to leave their phones alone when driving.

In addition to the reminders, police officers stopped the illegal mountain that had a mounted gas engine, ticketed the driver and removed the vehicle from the road.

They also stopped another “limited speed” motorcycle and ticketed the driver for not wearing a helmet.

Ridge Meadows RCMP also want to remind drivers that a motorized device that is not a limited speed motorcycle, or a vehicle that does not meet all of the requirements of a motor assisted cycle or e-bike, an electric kick scooter, an electric wheelchair or mobility scooter, is illegal to operate on public roads in B.C.

The road safety campaign was part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month in March.
