Local artists invited to design Maple Ridge’s new street banners

Local artists can submit their original work for new street banners to decorate Maple Ridge.

City Hall is embarking on the 2026 street banner program, and this public art initiative features original artwork displayed on banners throughout the community.

Three Maple Ridge-based artists will be selected to create designs reflecting the 2026 theme Bold By Nature – a contemporary interpretation of the community’s connection to the natural environment.

Selected artworks will be installed on 363 street banners across the city in mid-May.

Each of the three successful artists will receive a $3,000 fee.

“Public art plays an important role in how people experience and connect with our community,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “These banners are seen by thousands of residents and visitors every day, and this project gives local artists a unique opportunity to share their creativity while reflecting the natural beauty and character that make Maple Ridge such a special place to be.”

Last year’s street banner program highlighted the Choose Maple Ridge initiative, showcasing bold graphic designs that encourage residents to support local businesses and celebrate community pride.

To qualify, artists must live or work in Maple Ridge. Submissions must be original works created by the artist. AI-generated designs will not be accepted. Both new and previously completed works are eligible.

Designs must:

• Meet technical specifications for a finished size of 24 inches wide by 72 inches high.

• Include the city logo at the top or bottom.

• Account for translucency, as banners are visible from both sides.

• Be visually effective from a distance and when viewed briefly from moving vehicles.

• Avoid overly complex details or fine line work that may not reproduce clearly on fabric.

Proposals will be reviewed by a selection panel of city staff, community representatives, and arts professionals.

Interested artists can submit their applications via email by 11:59 p.m. on March 6 to Submissions@MapleRidge.ca. Artists can visit MapleRidge.ca/PublicArt for more information on the art call. Winners will be selected on March 13.

“Street banners are a highly visible and accessible form of public art,” said Russ Brummer, manager of arts, culture and events. “They allow emerging and established artists alike to contribute to the city’s visual identity while experimenting with bold, modern designs that can be appreciated at a city-wide scale.”
