Maple Ridge Ramblers repeat as zone wrestling champions

The Maple Ridge Ramblers are again zone champions, and have a huge team qualified and ready for the upcoming high school provincial championship tournament.

This is the seventh straight zone championship, said coach Kevin Menic. The girls beat out Saint Thomas Moore 48 to 39 in team scoring, and overall the Ramblers team beat Terry Fox 116 to 108.

The Ridge boys placed second to Fox in team scoring, losing narrowly 83 to 77. Points are given to the top six placers in each weight class.

The team ended up with four gold medals by Tyson Deane-Freeman, Sofia Krakovska, Callum Ross, and Teaken Christianson-Barker.

Silver medals were won by by Cooper Peterson, Linden Sinow-Horton, Mya Corney, Leo Voss, and Gabriel Frizzel, and bronze medals by Bella Berner, Damon Deane-Freeman, Maya Shylov and Nicole Castillo.

Ridge now has 28 wrestlers going to provincials, which is the largest crew the school has ever had going to the B.C. championships – and possibly the biggest team any school has ever had going to provincials, said Menic.

“However, this does not mean a provincial win, as only wrestlers who place in the top six earn points towards a provincial banner and we are now competing against the top wrestlers in all eight zones, not just our zone,” said Menic. “Being top six is not an easy task.”

Provincials are Feb. 20 to 21st at the PNE Forum in Vancouver.
