Canucks slide into Olympic break after 5-2 loss to Golden Knights

Five different players scored single goals, helping the Vegas Golden Knights to a 5-2 win over the visiting Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Wednesday at T-Mobile Arena.

Jack Eichel, Cole Reinhardt, Ivan Barbashev, Pavel Dorofeyev and Alexander Holtz scored for the Knights (26-16-14), with Akira Schmid making 21 saves for the win in goal.

Defenceman Elias Pettersson and Pierre-Olivier Joseph replied for the Canucks (18-33-6) who head into the league’s Olympic break in 32nd and last overall. Kevin Lankinen took the loss in net for Vancouver stopping 26 of 31 shots.

The teams battled through a scoreless first period, with Vancouver outshooting Vegas 8-7. Lankinen made the best stop of the period, a stellar save off Jeremy Lauzon on a two-on-one.

After no tallies in the first 20 minutes, the goals came fast and furious in the middle frame.

Eichel opened the scoring at 5:09 with his 20th goal of the year, wristing a shot past Lankinen from the right circle. Eichel ended a personal five-game goalless drought.

At 6:34, Reinhardt made it 2-0, beating Lankinen with a nice forehand deke for his third goal of the season.

Just 37 seconds later, Pettersson got the Canucks on the board, jumping into the rush on the left side and converting a feed from Liam Öhgren. It was Pettersson’s first goal in 21 games and second of the year.

Vegas restored the two-goal margin a mere 28 seconds later. Following a giveaway behind the Vancouver net, Mark Stone found Barbashev and his top-shelf shot beat Lankinen to make it 3-1.

Joseph scored his first as a Canuck with 7.8 seconds left in the period, wristing a shot from the left point and past Schmid to pull the Canucks within one at 3-2. It was his first goal in 74 games.

Shots after 40 minutes favoured the Canucks 19-16.

Vegas struck quickly in the third, with Dorofeyev and Holts scoring a minute apart to make it 5-2 before the period was four minutes old. Dorofeyev tapped home a pass from Mitch Marner for his 25th of the season at 2:31, while Holtz converted a nice feed from Keegan Kolesar for his third of the year 60 seconds later.

Vancouver’s next game after the break is Feb. 25, when they host the Winnipeg Jets.
