Schmaltz hat trick powers Utah Mammoth to convincing 6-2 win over Canucks

Nick Schmaltz had three goals and an assist, leading the Utah Mammoth to a 6-2 win over the visiting Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Monday at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mikhail Sergachev, Lawson Crouse and JJ Peterka also scored for the Mammoth (29-23-4), with Karel Vejmelka earning the win in goal, making 21 saves.

Liam Öhgren and Teddy Blueger scored for the Canucks (18-32-6). Kevin Lankinen absorbed the loss in the Vancouver net, stopping 14 of 20 shots.

Schmaltz opened the scoring 3:34 into the first period off a line rush, taking a nice cross-ice feed from John Marino and slotting it into the empty net behind Lankinen. It was the 20th goal of the year for Schmaltz, the fifth straight year he has reached that plateau.

Öhgren tied it at 1-1 at 7:04, converting a pass from Conor Garland for his fourth of the year.

Just 33 seconds later, Schmaltz restored Utah’s lead, taking a pass from Sean Durzi and beating Lankinen again.

Shots after one period favoured the Mammoth, 10-6.

In the middle frame, Sergachev made it 3-1 on the power play, ripping a 95 mph point shot past Lankinen at 8:45. Sergachev now has nine goals on the year.

Less than four minutes later, Crouse netted his 14th of the year when Marino’s shot tipped his stick, then went off a defender and behind Lankinen.

Peterka also hit the 20-goal mark, scoring at 16:05 after a scramble in the crease and upping Utah’s lead to 5-1.

With 1:11 left in the period, Blueger pulled Vancouver within 5-2, taking a tidy pass from Garland and snapping a shot low glove-side on Vejmelka. Blueger has five goals on the season, in only nine games.

Vancouver outshot Utah 8-7 in the second period.

In the third, Schmaltz completed his third career hat-trick, finishing a two-on-one feed from Clayton Keller at 12:22.

Utah’s Liam O’Brien tried to fight with Vancouver’s Evander Kane with less than five minutes to play, but the linesmen stepped in before any real punches could be thrown. Kane had rocked Utah’s Sean Durzi with a big hit earlier.

The Canucks visit the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday (7 p.m.), then will break with all teams for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Vancouver resumes regular-season action Feb. 25, when they host the Winnipeg Jets.
