LETTER: Trapping raccoons was ‘disgraceful’

Dear Editor,

[RE: Raccoons trapped in Maple Ridge yard were maimed, euthanized, Jan. 15, www.mapleridgenews.com]

It’s been a few days since I first read the article about the horrible citizen who trapped raccoons in his/her yard but then left them in the traps until the next day.

I haven’t stopped thinking about the suffering inflicted on those raccoons!

Many thanks to the great neighbour who reported this disgraceful act, and to the fur-bearers group, and the BC Conservation Officer Service for doing what they could to assist these poor creatures, who, as the report said “would still have been with their mother if they hadn’t encountered these traps.”

As a resident of Pitt Meadows, I have struggled with wildlife issues myself, and they seemed to be particularly bad this year.

But there are alternatives to such deliberate cruelty – and I would suggest that if living in an area fortunate to have the beauty of nature and wildlife is not your thing, then perhaps you should move into the city rather than torturing the wildlife that surrounds us.

Shame on you!

Joanne Fry, Pitt Meadows
