Folks planning to get away early for the holidays will face some disruption.
Expected high winds and waves in the Strait of Georgia on Monday (Dec. 22) have caused BC Ferries to cancel multiple sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.
All departures from Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen from 10 a.m. through to 5 p.m. have been cancelled.
BC Ferries has warned that additional sailings may also need to be cancelled if conditions do not improve.
Environment Canada has issued a yellow wind warning, with winds forecast to rise to southeast 70 gusting to 90 km/h late Monday afternoon over southern sections of Metro Vancouver near the Strait of Georgia, especially Tsawwassen and Boundary Bay.
Customers with a booking on one of the cancelled sailings will hear from the BC Ferries customer service centre to let them know if they can be accommodated on an alternate sailing later today, or if their booking must be cancelled.
In the case of a cancellation, BC Ferries will refund fees and/or fares.
“We know you have important places to be,” BC Ferries said in a news release. “We are currently monitoring the weather conditions with the goal of getting you underway as soon as it’s safe to do so.
“If conditions do not improve, additional sailings may need to be cancelled and we will let you know if that happens.”
