LETTER: Almost another road safety statistic

Dear Editor,

I’m warning pedestrians and motorists at this time of year (dark, often raining), to avoid becoming a statistic, as I almost was Dec. 12 at 7:25 pm.

My husband, our dog, and I were at the crosswalk at Park Road and Bonson Road (the north bit of Bonson just before the Lougheed Highway).

I wore a high visibility jacket.

A dark Acura sedan had stopped on Bonson, at the north corner, no turn signals on and appeared to be waiting for us.

We started across and it appeared for a moment that the car was waiting for us to finish crossing.

We were almost halfway, when the motorist suddenly and quickly headed into us, quite fast, making a left into the wrong lane (directly in front of us).

If I had not jumped back a couple of feet, I and possibly my husband and dog would have been severely injured, as I was within a foot of the front right side of the car.

We yelled, the motorist sped up and headed east on Park.

I called the non-emergency line of the RCMP as soon as possible. But, as it all happened so quickly, we were unable to remember the licence plate or get a photo.

They said they were unable to help us because of this.

Pedestrians, please wear high visibility clothing or banding in the evening, and be a bit extra paranoid of drivers.

Drivers, please respect pedestrians giving them ample time to finish crossing the road before you proceed.

This driver was either not in a fit condition to drive, or needs to be back at “L” level – dangerous no matter how you look at it.

Park Road, as always and as the council is aware, can be hazardous daytime or nighttime. A shame this council would not keep in traffic calming along it.

Be aware.
