Four additional grizzly bears have been captured by B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) officers as part of the ongoing investigation into a recent attack in Bella Coola.
According to a social media post, the bears are being examined for any evidence that could connect them to the incident that happened on Nov. 20 in Bella Coola that left four people seriously injured – one adult and three children.
The victims were among a group of students and teachers who had stopped along a trail near a river in the 4 Mile area when the attack took place. In total, 11 people were injured.
This follows the capture of four other grizzly bears last week, which were subsequently released after forensic tests confirmed they were not connected to the incident.
B.C. COS added that those bears were relocated to an undisclosed location within their home range, ensuring they remain far from the community.
In collaboration with wildlife biologists and the provincial wildlife veterinarian, the released bears were also fitted with GPS collars for post-release monitoring.
The B.C. COS said that early data indicate that the animals are healthy and preparing to den for the winter.
The agency said conservation officers remain in the Bella Coola area, closely monitoring bear activity as the investigation continues.
Authorities continue to urge residents to avoid the 4 Mile area, remain indoors, and not attempt to search for bears themselves.
