Earthquake rattles two Okanagan communities

Two areas of the Okanagan are reporting the affects of an earthquake.

Alertable multi-purpose communication service for Canadians, first reported a 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck 4 km North of Okanagan Falls at about 11:25 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27.

However, the United States Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 3.4 earthquake, located 10 km southeast of Peachland, across Okanagan Lake in the Chute Lake area, at about 11:19 p.m.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the alert sent out to Okanagan residents was not an earthquake early warning.

If you experienced strong shaking:

  • Stay calm and help the injured, if any.
  • Use the telephone only in an emergency.
  • Do not enter damaged buildings.
  • To prevent fire, check the chimneys or have them checked before using the furnace or fireplace.
  • Earthquakes can trigger huge ocean waves called tsunamis, the best warning is the earthquake itself and residents in tsunami risk areas should be prepared to evacuate to higher ground.

More to come.
