An inmate at Kent Institution in Agassiz was hospitalized after being assaulted.
According to a statement from Correctional Service Canada (CSC), the man was attacked in the maximum-security federal institution on Monday, Nov. 10.
Staff evaluated the inmate and transported him to an outside hospital for treatment. He has since returned and “appropriate action has been taken” against the assailants who have been identified.
No other inmates or staff members were injured during the incident. The Agassiz RCMP and the institution are currently investigating the attack.
“The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” CSC said in a press release. “In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.”
This is the second assault and hospitalization to take place this month at the institution. An inmate was also allegedly attacked by a fellow inmate on Nov. 3. The Agassiz RCMP and CSC are also investigating that incident. The assailant has also been identified and the CSC said action has been taken.
