Kamloops RCMP say high school gun threat was a prank, suspect identified

RCMP say that the threat of a person at a Kamloops high school with a gun on Nov. 6 was not credible.

Just before 2 p.m., police received a report of a person at NorKam Secondary School with a firearm, which prompted a lockdown of the school.

According to Superintendent Jeff Pelley, of the Kamloops RCMP Detachment, the 911 call that initiated the police response came from inside NorKam Secondary.

Following a police investigation, it was discovered that a phone was left unattended and was used by a student in the school to make a prank call to 911, claiming that there was a person at NorKam Secondary with a gun.

The student associated with the phone was detained briefly as part of the investigation, stated Supt. Pelley.

He added that a suspect has also now been identified.

“In order to maintain the safety of the students, a lockdown was initiated until investigators could assess the legitimacy of the report of a firearm in the school,” said Supt. Pelley. “Once the initial assessment determined there was no longer an immediate threat, the lockdown was released.”

Kamloops RCMP worked closely with School District 73 during this incident and “take all school threats seriously.”
