A Maple Ridge peace group is holding an event on the eve of Remembrance Day.
Maple Ridge Friends for Peace is holding its third annual candlelight vigil on Monday, Nov. 10. This year’s theme is “Never Again is Now,” in respect for victims of genocide.
The vigil will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the bandstand in Memorial Peace Park, downtown Maple Ridge.
“Canada is currently failing in its pledge of “never again” to prevent genocidal atrocities, in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Myanmar, and on and on,” said Katrina Driver, one of the vigil organizers.
“Never again is not a slogan, it’s a commitment,” she added.
All are welcome. Participants will be encouraged to share poems, songs, or their own thoughts. Maple Ridge Friends for Peace will bring some small lights and white poppies.
“In a world filled with ongoing conflicts and wars, it is everyday civilians who are paying the highest price – losing their families, homes, jobs, food and their lives,” said Sharon von Hollen, another organizer from Friends for Peace.
“As Canadian citizens, our voices are our strongest tool to make a difference for them.”
