ON THE PAGE: Celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th birthday with tea, trivia

Fall can be a challenging time of year with the shorter days, rain, and cold.

My instinct is often to hunker down at home with a good book and a cup of tea.

But when the days grow dark and glum, it’s actually the perfect time to look outward — to connect with others, try something new, and take advantage of all the community opportunities around us.

At the Maple Ridge Public Library, there are plenty of programs and events this season to help lift your spirits and meet your neighbours.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 1 to 2 p.m., join us for An Introduction to Brain Health.

Presenters from the Alzheimer Society of BC will share how it’s never too late to make positive changes for a healthier brain. Learn about natural aging, dementia risk reduction, memory, brain training, and more.

Did you know that 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth on Dec. 17, 1775?

Around the world, fans have been celebrating the beloved author with balls, festivals, and special exhibits.

Here at Maple Ridge Public Library, we’re joining in the fun with a Jane Austen Tea & Trivia night on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Test your Austen knowledge, win prizes, and enjoy tea and treats in true regency style.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn the ukulele, the Maple Ridge Ukulele Circle welcomes new and experienced players alike.

The group meets on the last Sunday of each month, from 2 to 4 p.m., and just celebrated its ninth anniversary.

You can even borrow a ukulele from the FVRL Playground lending collection – visit www.fvrl.bc.ca/playground/ukuleles to learn more.

For those who enjoy singing, don’t miss the Seniors Christmas Afternoon on Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The Silvertones Choir will lead the audience in carols old and new, with local authors sharing seasonal readings. Coffee, tea, and treats will add to the festive atmosphere.

Both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows public libraries host weekly drop-in knitting and stitching groups.

In Maple Ridge, Knitters & Natters meet Saturdays, 2 to 4 p.m.

In Pitt Meadows, the Knit & Stitch group meets Mondays, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Bring your own materials, share ideas and techniques, and enjoy friendly conversation – everyone is welcome.

At Pitt Meadows Public Library, the Monday Morning Coffee Club is another cozy way to beat the blues. Drop in for coffee, conversation, or a board game with new friends.

And if you love getting crafty, don’t miss Creative Crafternoons at Pitt Meadows Public Library. These all-ages, drop-in sessions are a fun way to experiment with art.

Today (Tuesday, Nov. 4), from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., try beginner printmaking, and on Tuesday, Dec. 9, again from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., people can explore collage portraits.

This fall, trade a bit of screen time or solitude for shared time and conversation. You might just discover that the best cure for the fall blues is community – and there’s no better place to find it than your local library.

For more information about these and other Fraser Valley Regional Library programs and services, visit your local branch or check out www.fvrl.bc.ca.
